Report: Spurs could be a possible next stop for DeMar

SAN ANTONIO — According to Miami Herald sports writer Barry Jackson, the San Antonio Spurs are being mentioned as a possible destination for a familiar face: DeMar DeRozan.

Jackson reports that there is a possibility the Spurs will sign and trade the former swingman.

Adding DeRozan will bolster the young Spurs’ roster with more experienced players, as the team has reportedly signed Chris Paul.

The big question, however, is whether Spurs will agree to a move to Chicago and who (or what) they are willing to part with.

The team has a treasure trove of first- and second-round picks, including the Hawks’ unprotected picks in the 2025 NBA Draft.

The Bulls likely want the Spurs to trade players that include some combination of a player (or players) currently on the roster, such as Keldon Johnson or Devin Vassell.

Things turned sour for the Bulls and DeRozan after Chicago traded for Josh Giddey. According to a report, the deal forced DeRozan to decide that he would leave the team in free agency.

DeRozan averaged 24 points per game on 48 percent shooting last season. He also had 4.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists.

San Antonio traded DeRozan to the Bulls in 2021 for Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a protected first-round draft pick, and two second-round draft picks.

In his final seasons with Spurs he was the team’s mentor and, playing alongside Victor Wembanyama, he created more space on the pitch for the centre to play in.

He is familiar with the Spurs system (2018-2021) and can guide the young players in the current reconstruction.
